Travel is one of my true loves. I caught the travel bug when travel became a part of my career. My first overseas assignment was a week in Thailand. In about 1100, the Benedictine brothers established the heingau's first monastery at Johannisberg, between Winkel and, to the west, Riidesheim. Unfortunately, these monks met with less succesS than their Cistercian colleagues at Eberbach. Despite its excellent wines, the monastery, battered by wars and deep in debt, was dissolved in the 16th century. The abbots of Fulda (see The Center chapter) built a Baroque castle over the monastery's cellars in the 18th century, but that was bombed out in 1942, and today's Schloss is a postwar reconstruction.
